I'm annoyed

So I just read a story that an 11 year old boy in Louisiana had his arm bitten off, at the shoulder, by an alligator. This wasn't some rouge alligator. It was a big ass alligator that the locals in that area actually nicknamed 'Big Joe.' What irks me is that the law officials went and killed the alligator to try and save this kid's arm! Ok, I get it. If my arm was bitten off you bet your ass I'd want my arm back but this is ridiculous. They went and hunted him, shot him and emptied his stomach and retrieved the arm. What's even worse is that they weren't able to reattach the arm! Are you kidding me? So you just killed this alligator for nothing. Sharks do this all the time and there are always people fighting to leave them alone. It is rare that people get to retaliate on the shark. I just don't see how this is any different. How could they possibly think this was going to work out. I'm not blaming this kid in any way, but he was swimming in an area that alligators are present. And hello!!! Locals had a name for this alligator in particular! Ugh. I'm so annoyed.
